Lauren believes people learn by doing and is always searching for new ways to help people engage more deeply in the learning process.  She integrates a variety of mixed media in her sessions and draws heavily on her artistic background to help people expand their thinking and to solve problems in new, innovative ways.

Lauren is a founding member and master teaching artist with Arts Corps, a nationally recognized arts education program in Seattle, Washington established in 2000.  In addition to Arts Corps, Lauren has worked with many arts education programs in the Pacific Northwest including Seattle Public Schools, Arts Impact: Principals Project, Centrum Education, the Seattle Center Academy, the Seattle Children’s Museum and Power of Hope.

As an artist, Lauren has exhibited extensively since 1994.  She has been awarded numerous commissioned projects.  She also works with her husband, Donald Green, photographer and mixed–media artist.  Together they show their work locally and nationally.

Lauren holds a degree in Fine Art in Textile Design and Sculpture from California State University at Long Beach.

“Lauren’s teaching focuses on key habits of mind central to the creative process: critical thinking, imagination, reflection, courage, risk-taking, and persistence. She approaches each lesson with rich dialogue, exploration, and encourages teamwork to foster imagination and innovation. She guides participants to construct innate knowledge and reflect on their own learning. Lauren is an amazing educator.”

–Deborah Sepulveda, Education Director, The Frye Museum

“Lauren is skilled at involving others in meaningful and enlightening experiences that center around creativity and leave participants empowered by their own creative potential. She brings enthusiasm and openness to collaboration. She listens deeply, and much like a skilled improvisational actor is observant, responsive to and ever mindful of the power of the ensemble over the individual. Lauren truly understands that transformative creativity can result when collaborators build on each other’s ideas.”

–Darwin Nordin, Artist and Educator

“Lauren Atkinson is visual artist who encompasses a true gift as a creative educator and a leader in arts education. She carries a strong respect for the creative process through all that she does and is able to reach different kinds of learners at their own level.”
